About Jones Brothers Marine

In 1989 Rob and Donnie Jones, the Jones brothers, launched their first “Bateau” and solved a difficult problem for coastal anglers.  For years the brothers had sold aluminum johnboats at their retail store near Morehead City.  At the time, however, they noticed that many johnboats didn’t hold together well because of the beating all boats received in the harsh and rough saltwater environment of the sounds and near shore waters of the Southern Outer Banks.  From experience, Rob and Donnie knew that wide, flat-bottomed johnboats were often the favorite craft of anglers seeking speckled trout, flounder, and redfish.

Today the original retail store located on highway 70 West is still the largest dealer for Jones Brothers Bateaus on the East Coast.  It is operated by an experienced crew with David Wood heading up Sales, Ed Ward and Jim Sproul as Parts Managers, Chris Burleson as General Manager and Service Manager, and Gerald Taylor in Parts, Service and Delivery.

In the fall of 2003, an experienced group of boat builders began planning a boat company designed specifically around the new heavyweight four-stroke outboards. With ideas garnered from experiences with the world’s leading boat brands, the results are striking. The result is Southport Boat Works. 

Southport boats are designed from the keel up to take advantage of the coming trend in offshore outboard power: big, four-stroke six cylinder engines. The economy and quiet power of the new four-strokes is phenomenal. Yet, most offshore boats are designed around outboard engines of the 1990s that weigh as much as 150 pounds less than the new power plants.

Beamy, with deep vees, Southport hull designs are meant to handle these heavyweight outboards, providing a wider range of planing speeds, and soft, dry ride in rough conditions. All with a sense of style and fishing function all their own.
